Bean Bags 101 - Selecting a Bean Bag

Selecting a Bean Bag Chair, like most everything in life, is not as straight forward as one might think.  I recently began a hunt for bean bag chairs for my apartment and found myself lost in a vast world of bean bag design and material options. 

When adding anything to the home, one must consider whether that addition will be merely decorative or functional as well.  Luckily, bean bags can be both.  I thought I would write a 2 part series about Bean Bags to hopefully help you out when considering a bean bag chair.

Bean Bag 101

1. Bean Bags come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors.  Everything from Tiger Striped Faux Fur to Giant, Adult-sized bean bag sofas, to child sizes.  Even bean bags with your favorite sports team!
2. Bean Bags range in price from the $19.99 blue light special to the quality bean bag that will be a piece of furniture in your home for years to come.
3. Bean bags come with a few major variations like the liner and the filler. 
   • A bean bag with a removable liner is perfect for kids, who, as we all know, tend to spill things!  The removable bean bag liner makes the bean bag easy to wash and maintain.  Some bean bags don’t have a liner, not necessarily a drawback as it helps keep the cost down. 
   • Then Bean Bag Filler is quite another matter.  While it may sound like just another way for bean bag makers to collect your hard earned cash, the bean bag filler is the most important part of your bean bag selection.  Many bean bags, (like the blue light special - I know, I made the mistake of buying one), have irregular shaped pieces of foam for filler.  While this foam is no less comfortable, is does, with use, grind down and wear away.  Eventually, needing to be replaced.  More expensive, but much higher quality bean bag filler consists of symmetrical foam beads, which do not grind against one another as the bean bag is used.  Somewhere in between a mix or blend of the two fillers are also available.  It all depends on you, the purchaser/bean bag owner.  A child who uses the bean bag daily might grind down the filler and need it to be replaced more often than an adult, so it would be wise in the case of a child’s bean bag, to initially start with a higher quality filler.
4.  Customization of your bean bag!  Most reputable bean bag vendors will offer a line of bean bags that have options such as color, liner, and even embroidery and monogramming.  If you’re getting the bean bag for a gift, take the time to learn about and understand all the customization options.
