Preventing Bacteria & Algae Build Up on Your Water Fountains | Cleaning Series Post 2

How do you keep your water fountains clean and bacteria or algae free?

1. Distilled Water: using distilled water for your water fountains works the same as providing distilled water for your cats or newborn babies. There isn’t any of the extra minerals in the distilled water as there may be out of the kitchen tap! Distilled water isn’t mandatory, but highly recommended.

2. UV Lights: these lights filter the water at the base of your water fountains. The water filters through killing the bacteria that may be in the water. UV lights work best on products that are a little harder to clean on a regular basis like a wall fountain.

3. Additives: something like Care Free Enzymes can be added to your water supply for the water fountain. This helps cut back on the bacteria growing in the water. Add some additives to each gallon of water that circulates through the fountain and this will help maintain the cleanliness of your water feature.

4. Common Cleaning: cleaing your water fountain on a regular basis will help limit the algae and bacteria. Common cleaning is a must! It is not only important to clean the inside of your fountain, but the outside as well. I know my house collects a lot of dust, especially in the winter. If I didn’t clean the outside of my fountain, I could only imagine what was falling into the water!
