In our last water fountain article we talked about the role of water fountains and Feng Shui. Let’s get back to the topic today with a deeper exploration of how Feng Shui works and how it can benefit you even if you don’t belong to a culture that uses Feng Shui symbolism.

The Meaning of a Water Fountain

As we said in our last article, water is a sign of stillness and abundance. In traditional Feng Shui, water is a core symbol (“Feng Shui” can be literally translated as “wind-water”) that’s associated with cool temperatures, the color black, the north and yin in the yin/yang (passive/active) cycle in traditional Chinese thought.

On the other hand, not everyone who uses Feng Shui is immersed in Chinese tradition. The Greeks founded the Western tradition of the elements: earth, air, fire and water. In that scheme, water’s associated with intuition and calmness. In India’s Vastu Shastra landscape and building design system water is the common essence of life.

Moving water adds associations related to sound and motion. In Feng Shui, a flowing water fountain represents prosperity – abundance literally moves in to your space drop by drop. Indian thought links fountains to rivers, which are ancient symbols of purity that move negative emotions out of your presence. Making your Water Fountain a Personal Symbol

In truth, a water fountain in your home or garden will affect you based on your own psychology, the culture you belong too and the way you envision luck, attitude and design. The fountain you choose is also very important. Some of the old Feng Shui rules might not always apply to modern water fountains. For example, tradition advises against putting water fountains in your bedroom because it could distract you and fill your head with financial worries, but these ideas were formulated before convenient tabletop water fountains became available. Personal water fountains can be designed to create almost no noise and present a still, placid surface. Many small Feng Shui water fountains do just that.
