Maintenance of a Water Fountain

A very common question, is my water fountain going to be difficult to care for?  The answer is no, however, water fountains are not maintenance free and giving your fountains a little TLC will definitely keep them beautiful and in good working condition for many, many years.  Here are a few tips to maintaining your indoor and outdoor water fountains.

The most common problem with fountains is algae and build up.  Both are very easily solved by cleaning your water fountain periodically and either using distilled water or a fountain care product.  I always recommend cleaning your fountains once very couple months.  If it is a large feature with a lot of water you can probably go 3-4 months between cleanings as long as the fountain is continuously running.  Cleaning your fountain can be simple if you don’t allow it to accumulate white scale or other hard water stains.  When cleaning it be sure you remove the pump and clean it very good along with any other removable parts such as pebbles or slate.

The pumps used in water fountains are aquarium grade pumps and are meant to run 24/7.  You will get the longest life out of your fountain pump if you do just that.  As long as there is water in your fountain there is no reason why it needs to be turned off at night or when you go to work.  Keeping the water circulating will also prevent murky water and algae build up.

The most important thing you can do for your water fountains is be sure the pump is completely submersed in water all the time.  Depending on the size of your water fountain and the humidity level of the air will depend on how often you have to add water.  This could range from every 2 -7 days.

Water fountains provide many benefits that completely offset the little bit of maintenance involved and if you get on a good schedule of filling your fountains, cleaning them and shining them up, you are sure to enjoy their beauty and relaxing benefits they provide!
