Preparing Outdoor Fountains for Winter

Winterizing your outdoor fountains is easy and affordable. Hard to believe we are talking about the freezing weather already but I guess it doesn’t hurt to be prepared for the freezing temps when it comes to your beautiful outdoor fountains.

How you winterize your garden fountains depends on the size and placement of the fountain.  If you have a small fountain that is easy to manage the best thing to do would be to bring it indoors or to a garage for the winter months.  This also goes for lightweight fountains.  Basic rule of thumb, if it is easily movable and lightweight simply bring it to a dry place to avoid water from getting in the fountain where it can freeze.

If you have a large fountain, ligthweight or stone, you can prepare your fountain for winter the same way.  The main caution to take is to be sure fountain stays dry.  The main cause of cracking in any material is temperature change and water expanding and contracting as it freezes.  If you follow these simple steps to winterize your water fountains, you are on your way to an outdoor fountain that will last years to come:

  • Remove the pump from your fountain and store it indoors (this is also a great opportunity to clean your fountain pump)
  • Drain your fountain and get it as dry as possible.
  • Cover your water fountain with an outdoor fountain cover or a tarp/blanket to keep water and snow from reaching the fountain.

These three simple steps to winterize your garden and outdoor water fountains are well worth it and will make your fountain easy to start back up again in the spring!
