As Temperatures Fall, an Indoor Fountain Can Make You Feel Warmer

Most people associate water fountains with cooling off, but did you know that they can help keep you warm, too? This fact seems counterintuitive, but as the nights get cooler it might be time for you to purchase that indoor fountain you’ve been thinking of to ward of the first touches of late summer and early autumn chill.

The secret lies in how our bodies react to relative humidity. If you live in a moist climate you know how humid days can make the heat hit especially hard. What people often forget, however, is that this effect doesn’t just work on those sweaty, sultry days. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Environmental Data and Information Service and National Climatic Center, we perceive temperatures to be in their normal range at somewhere between 50% and 70% relative humidity. Get below that and the temperature feels colder – above that, it feels warmer.

This makes an indoor fountain a valuable part of any dry, drafty room. By increasing local humidity your indoor fountain makes the immediate area feel warmer by a few degrees. This makes indoor water fountains ideal autumn décor, when dry air can make the difference between your perceptions of comfortable or chilly weather based entirely on relative humidity.

In the winter, severe dry air can make it appear to be as much as 5 degrees cooler than it actually is. Keeping a tabletop fountain, wall fountain or other modest indoor fountain will also bring your physical sensations in line with the actual temperature.

In short, even when it gets too cool to enjoy an outdoor fountain, indoor water fountains can still keep you relaxed. Its soothing sounds and appearance are only part of the picture – you can feel the rest in your skin and bones.
