Liven Up the Outside of Your House with Rain Chains

Why settle for boring old gutter downspouts when you can liven up the outside of your home with beautiful rain chains? Rain chains are unique, artistic pieces used to guide water from the roof to the ground. Rain chains visibly guide water down chains or cups, creating an aesthetically pleasing water feature. The relaxing sound of individual raindrops trickling down or rushing white water is a real treat to listen to.

Rain chains have been around for centuries, originating in Japan hundreds of years ago. The Japanese used old fashioned rain chains (known as ‘kusari doi’) as a way to collect rain water. Kusari doi were used to transport rainwater down chains from the roof to large barrels at the bottom of the chain links. The water collected in the barrel was used by the family members of the household as drinking water.

Rain chains are a lovely, pleasant decorative and useful item to add to the outside of your home… and if you’re looking to go green, you might consider collecting your own rain water in barrels at the bottom of your rain chains to use as drinking water for your family.
